PrEP PROJECT
THE BEST OF THE BEST IS IN MIGRANT
About Us
- PrEP is a project for HIV prevention. Uses a prevention strategy where an HIV-negative person takes anti-HIV drugs, before coming into contact with the virus, to reduce their risk of infection.
- Basically PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis'. 'Prophylaxis' means, to prevent or control the spread of an infection or disease. It can help prevent you from becoming infected with HIV by being exposed to the virus. It is a prevention alternative that works by taking a pill once a day and returning to your doctor every 3 months for a follow-up appointment and a new prescription.
- To start with PrEP you should talk to your doctor or healthcare provider to find out if PrEP is a good resource for you. If you and your partner understand that taking PrEP can decrease your chance of becoming infected, the doctor will proceed to perform some laboratories that include: an HIV test and a kidney function test, among others.
- PrEP is covered by many health plans. You can also contact a PrEP coordinator at Migrant Health Center, Inc., to learn more about PrEP, If you need some financial assistance programs for PrEP, and to verify your eligibility. For more information about the medication, you can access the page at http://www.prepfacts.org/ or contact our PrEP coordinator for an orientation and/or evaluation appointment.
